Ginny Ferguson, formerly known as Ginny Brewer Flahive,
is the developer of the Smart Fish Method. Having enjoyed extensive
participation in the sport of competitive swimming as a youngster,
she naturally found herself wanting to teach swimming. During her
college years (1972 - 1977) in Southern California, Ginny became
certified in the Red Cross and YMCA, worked at the Pasadena Recreation
Department and the Long Beach YMCA. However, neither method seemed
to have enough information about teaching infants and toddlers to
swim. Since drowning (in Southern California) was and still is the
leading cause of accidental death in children under the age of 4,
it became important to her to learn a better way to work with that
age group. In 1978, she went to work for The Greta Anderson Swim
School, in Los Alamitos, in order to learn the Survival Back Float
Method, wherein students from the age of 6 months could be taught
to roll over and back float independently, in the event that they
might fall into a body of water. see: www.GretaAnderson.com
She soon found that the method to teach infants would also work
well for all age groups and she developed a specific learn-to-swim
progression beyond the basic survival skill of teaching babies to
back float.
In the fall of 1978, Ginny started her own Watersafe Swim School,
first in Lakewood, then in Anaheim, Orange, and eventually - in
1988, she opened up the current home base location in Seal Beach,
California.
In the year 2000, Ginny founded the Nova Swim School as an adjunct
to the famous and successful Irvine Novaquatics competitive swim
team. This school has since expanded to include 4 locations: Fountain
Valley, Tustin, Irvine, and Aliso Viejo. www.NovaSwimSchool.com
In 2004, The Tichenor Orthopedic Clinic for Children at tichenorclinic.com
selected Ginny to set up a swim lesson program |

The confident swimmer considers floating to be an alternative to swimming.
Visualize a child or person floating in water - face up (supine) with
an appearance of DOING NOTHING! Face is out of the water (maybe even smiling),
This child is actually DOING IT ALL with Comfort, Trust, and Knowledge
of Skill.
